Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great...Hero or Villain?
Alexander the Great did many positive things. He was a great and fearless leader who always set a good example for his troops. If they went hungry or thirsty, so did he. He visited his wounded troops after battles. He was strategic and clever. He was a smart on the battle field. He learned from his father and was well educated. He looked to the future and developed his troops. Alexander adjusted his battle style when he learned new things. He spread the Greek culture. He fought 70 battles without losing and conquered many lands. He built new cities where others had been destroyed. He let the people keep their customs and beliefs but they had to pay taxes to him.
As Alexander the Great became more and more successful, he became cocky and arrogant. His arrogance led to him making bad decisions that put his troops in danger. He also became greedy and always wanted more. At some point his troops did not want to follow him anymore. Alexander also killed many of his close advisers if they crossed him. He drank heavily which made him violent and nasty. The more glory he got, the more glory he wanted.
I think that Alexander the Great was a hero because he was a smart leader on the battle field and cared about his troops. He was a smart military man. He treated his troops well and saved them in many situations. He was willing to learn from others and learn from his mistakes. Alexander was not perfect though. He made mistakes and let power go to his head.

My Three Wishes...
1. I wish to be buried with my best friends.
2. I wish to be placed in a coffin that is elegant on the outside and on the inside, with a big fancy grave stone.
3. I wish to remain in the same spot for 100 years and then be dug up so my body and belongings can be studied. Then I wish to be reburied in the same spot with new things so the process can repeat for many years to come.

Spreading Hellenistic Culture
Alexander the Great's goal was to spread Greek culture to the lands he conquered. He believed that Greeks and non-Greeks were equal and he wanted to blend the cultures. He respected the culture of other people and let them keep their religions and ways after he conquered them. Alexander the Great took out the king and queens as rulers and put in a city-state form or government. This allowed the people to have a say in their rights and leadership.
Western civilization is now a blend of different cultures. For example, the United States is known as a melting pot which is a mix of many different cultures. Many governments are lead by the people who have a say in their elected officials. An example is like the democracy in the Unites States. The Greek architecture was copied to other buildings throughout the lands. Some of this architecture can be found in places Washington DC at the Capitol Building and the White House.
