Romulus wanted to build his city near the Tiber River because the river provided fresh water. The soil around the river was rich volcanic soil and was very good for farming. Rome is known as "the city of seven hills" which joined together to make up Rome. The Tiber River was narrow enough that it could be bridged to join together both sides of the river. Each settlement though was surrounded by marshlands and when the marshlands flooded, it made it difficult to travel from one to the other and made each individual settlement open to attacks. Romulus had the marshlands drained over time. Romulus also knew that the river would provide good transportation. This location also made it a good trade route. The easy travel and good farming attracted people to Rome. Rome's population grew with people coming from all over. Romulus was able to build a big army with so many people. Rome also became a rich city from all the trade. This made some other cities in the area jealous and led to conflicts.
